Introduction to Agricultural Science and Technology, a comprehensive course, provides students the knowledge and skills necessary for career planning and advanced study in the broad field of agriculture/agribusiness. Topics of instruction include the agricultural industry and its global importance; agricultural leadership organizations; agricultural research; concepts of animal and plant science; basics of mechanized agriculture; and personal and communication skills.

AGRICULTURAL MECHANICS CLASSES

Agriculture Mechanics and
Metal Technologies
Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR
Grade placement: 9-12 Credit1
Introduction to Agricultural Mechanics is an exploratory course that introduces students to agricultural mechanics with emphasis on basic theory and technical skill development. Topics and skill areas include safety, tool identification, carpentry, electricity, plumbing, masonry, fencing, painting, and hot and cold metal skills.


Agricultural Structures & Design Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR and Agriculture Mechanics and Metal Technologies.

Agricultural Structures develops technical skills in the maintenance, evaluation, design, and completion of agricultural structures using contemporary construction techniques.


Agricultural Equipment Design Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR and Agriculture Mechanics and Metal Technologies.

Agricultural Equipment Design, a laboratory-oriented course, covers the technical skills and scientific concepts necessary in agribusiness. The course focuses on soil and water management; electrification; oxyfuel and electric cutting and welding; concrete construction; building planning and construction; and small engine, equipment, and machinery maintenance and repair.

Agricultural Power Systems            Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR and Agriculture Mechanics and Metal Technologies
Grade placement: 11-12 Credit: 2
Agricultural Power Systems is a continuation of the Agriculture Equipment course. The course focuses on soil and water management; electrification; oxyfuel and electric cutting and welding; concrete construction; building planning and construction; and small engine, equipment, and machinery maintenance and repair.

PLANT SCIENCE CLASSES

Forestry and Woodland Ecosystems Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR
Grade placement: 9-12 Credit: 1
Forestry and Wood Technology familiarizes students with the forestry and wood technology industries. Students acquire a historical perspective of the industries and use it as a benchmark as they develop technical skills in dendrology, biometrics, forest management, forest utilization, wood product technology, and research and development.

Wildlife, fisheries and Ecology Management Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR
Grade placement: 9-12 Credit: 1
Wildlife, fisheries and Ecology Management is designed to examine the importance of wildlife and outdoor recreation. The emphasis is on the sound management of wildlife and all natural resources in a way that promotes continued use. Safety education programs for hunters, boaters, and anglers are emphasized.

Horticultural Science Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR
Grade placement: 9-12 Credit: 1
Horticultural Science is designed to develop an understanding of common horticultural management practices as they relate to food and ornamental plant production. To prepare for careers in horticultural systems, students must attain academic skills and knowledge, acquire technical knowledge and skills related to horticulture and the workplace,

Floral Design (considered an ART credit also!) Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR

This course focuses on building skills in advanced floral design and providing students with a thorough understanding of the design

elements and planning techniques used to produce unique specialty floral designs that support the goals and objectives of a specific

occasion or event.


LEADERSHIP/OFFICER CLASSES

Professional Standards in Agribusiness Prerequisite: Principles of AF&NR
Grade placement: 9-12 Credit: 1

Professional Standards in Agribusiness primarily focuses on leadership, communication, employer employee relations, and problem solving as they relate to agribusiness. To prepare for careers in agribusiness systems, students must attain academic skills and knowledge, acquire technical knowledge and skills related to leadership development and the workplace, and develop knowledge and skills regarding agricultural career opportunities, entry requirements, and industry expectations. To prepare for success, students need opportunities to learn, reinforce, apply, and transfer their knowledge and skills in a variety of settings. Students are encouraged to participate in extended learning experiences such as career and technical student organizations and other leadership or extracurricular organizations.
